Amplify GSA Summit Looks to Create Safe Spaces for LGBTQ+ Youth in Boston

Mayor Michelle Wu and her office of LGBTQ+ Advancement, in collaboration with the Boston Celtics, presented Amplify GSA to promote, support, and protect Genders and Sexualities Alliances (GSA) in Boston public schools.

Genders and Sexualities Alliances, or GSAs, are student-run school groups that unite LGBTQ+ and allied youth to build community and organize around issues impacting them.

The Amplify GSA Youth Summit was held Sunday, May 21, at the Boston Arts Academy. Students performed and the floor was open to a lot of important discussions with the overall goal of supporting LGBTQ+ students, and creating safe, welcoming and accepting school communities in Boston.

Boston Arts Academy’s Dance Department is excited to celebrate its 25-year commitment to dance education and provide Boston Public School students with life-changing dance training and artistic opportunities. Springfest 2025 is an inspiring display of how BAA creates the next generation of dancers. The show features students and alums performing the choreography of BAA faculty and guest artists, including BAA alumni Demetrius Burns of

Throughout its 25-year history, BAA Dance Department has been a distinguished group that fosters exceptional talent from the Boston youth. The Department has developed partnerships with numerous premiere arts and dance organizations, many of which will play a role in the show’s pieces. Our alums have gone on to perform with world-renowned dance companies such as 

Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Sarasota Ballet, and StaatsTheater Nuremberg

. BAA dancers participated in the commercial dance world. They toured with major artists such as Hayley Kiyoko, Kendrick Lamar, and Lil Nas X. 

 winner and alum Russel Ferguson, who mentored our dancers throughout rehearsing. This collaboration is one way we connect the past to our future performers. 

We celebrate this milestone in our new state-of-the-art Boston Arts Academy Theater in the newly named Elma Lewis Building 

. Featured before each performance will be a collection of unique dance installations that reflect different elements of the dance curriculum. The talent is a diverse group of student artists committed to dance in all aspects of their life. BAA’s youth channels an emotional connection to the dances performed; they will tell their stories without words. Their goal is to inspire others and create a unique experience for each audience member with the dedication of our students and celebrate the alums who helped keep the practice alive.

Another Monday at BAA! With a twist, BAA held a special concert during lunch. WanMore performed on the gathering stair stage and brought along special guests. DJ Klive and Young Dylan opened for the group. Student's smiled for the rest of the day from the unexpected party. WE LOVE young artists motivating other young artists; let's keep this energy going!

Our sophomore dancers experienced a unique dance lesson from Celebrity Series’ Donovan Reed. The class learned an original piece practicing movements that pushed them beyond classical training. Kyle is part of A.I.M. Aim by Kyle Abraham is a leading dance company based in NYC.

We had the pleasure of hearing what would happen if a lifelong Balafon player specializing in Western African music teamed up with a Western classical cellist! The two created a synergy working together for the two musical influences to harmonize effortlessly. Our students couldn’t help but dance and clap along- a much-needed Monday vibe!

BAA Students Collaborate Professional Designers for Boston Fashion Week

The lesson focused on inspiration, creation, and applying culture to art. Watching the conception turn to reality for the Black Panther costumes gave students a real-life idea of Hollywood-level creation for a production.

Masary Studios held informational showings of the 1st-floor installation on October 18th and 19th. “The artwork is based on concepts of memory, using machine learning and camera vision to detect activity in front of it and recognize when activity takes place. The artwork records these memories and expresses them back through the large  scale LED display and custom lighting fixtures. Constantly learning and making memories, the artwork plays back stored memories based on what it observes in real-time based on the school activity.”- Masary Studios

Wondering About The Lobby Installation?

In Matt's case, we see a multicultural sports fan with a past of unique experiences that lead him to create numerous books and screen adaptations. Matt spoke frankly with our students about the very real gripes writers can face while they attempt to create a fleshed-out story from just an idea. Grappling with his unique challenges growing up, he provided pertinent strategies to deal with the ever-present obstacles a writer can face. Some include: locking yourself away from distractions, being ok with ideas that don't have a perfect ending- instead using them as inspiration for something else. Matt believes that in art, the people to appreciate your work are actually forgiving you. That forgiveness is an unknowing acceptance between the author and the project. The grandiose idea you once had in your head is not what the product consequentially becomes.

The two athletes appeared at the Boston Arts Academy to surprise and hype up students during the unveiling of the school’s new facilities.

The academy has been celebrating its 25th anniversary and hosted the pair, who spoke with students and gave advice.

“All of you here have a special talent, have a special ability,” said Williams. “Use that gift to spread it to the world and shine a light that you guys have to others.”

“Enjoy, take advantage of it, think about your future, think about (beginning to become) somebody, work hard, because the future is out there waiting for you,” Ortiz said. “God bless.”

Other guests on Thursday included Boston Mayor Michelle Wu.

Getting its start in 1998, the school’s new, five-story facility on Ipswich Street encompasses 153,500 square feet,

, increasing its capacity by more than 15%.
